A Child Specialist is a psychologist or therapist who represents the child/children in the divorce process, and who maintains a neutral position with both the parents and the other members of the collaborative team. The Child Specialist assists the child/children to verbalize their feelings, thoughts, and concerns about the divorce. This professional also provides the child/children with tools to manage their own stress as their parents work through the divorce process.
While the Child Specialist uses their clinical skills in working with the child/children and their parents, it is not therapy in the traditional sense, since the sole focal point is guiding them through the divorce process.
The Child Specialist assists the collaborative team in providing valuable information about the child/children, and to keep the focus on the needs of the child/children. The Child Specialist also works with the coaching team in developing an effective co-parenting plan.

Why use a Child Specialist?

  • Ensures the child/children's best interests are central in the process
  • Provides parents the guidance to help their child/children through the divorce
  • Discusses post divorce challenges in co-parenting the child/children
  • Maintains neutrality in the collaborative process
